Black women face a unique intersection of challenges, including systemic racism, gender-based discrimination, and heightened stress levels, contributing to perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) at rates surpassing their White counterparts. Disturbingly, these disparities are exacerbated by barriers such as financial constraints, mental health stigma, a shortage of culturally competent providers, and societal expectations that hinder Black women from seeking help. Our webinar is a call to action, recognizing that mindfulness, when culturally modified for Black women, can be a powerful tool in reducing stress and enhancing overall mental well-being. Join Presenter Tacha Fetcher, LCSW, in this essential discussion as we delve into the profound impact of perinatal mental health on Black women and unveil best practices for addressing these challenges through culturally responsive mindfulness interventions.

Learning Objectives:
  • Participants will examine the Strong Black Woman's schema and it impacts on mental health of perinatal Black women.
  • Participants will describe existing research on mindfulness and its effectiveness to treat perinatal depression and anxiety.
  • Participants will explore three cultural values to include when using culturally responsive mindfulness interventions specific to Black women.
  • Participants will understand how to apply culturally-attuned language to build a greater sense of wellbeing amongst perinatal Black women.
